Disability Rights Legal Center

Protecting the Possibilities

Community Outreach Program

Program Overview

The Community Outreach Program provides basic and advanced self-advocacy, etiquette, disability rights, special education and other law trainings to the public and private sector. We offer seminars on disability rights for Businesses, governments and community groups.  We bring disability rights advocates together to build cohesive disability policy and bring students with disabilities together with mentors.  Throughout the year, the Community Outreach Program will organize and host several events (i.e., conferences, public forums, Disability Mentoring Day, etc.) as well as attend numerous community sponsored fairs and expos.

The Disability Rights Legal Center has received a grant from the County of Orange Health Care Agency to conduct Health Care Rights trainings in the Orange County. Click here for more info. To learn more about the resources available in Orange County click here.

The Facts

People with disabilities often do not understand their civil rights and do not know how to implement them. People from minority communities do not know about the services available to people with disabilities.

Businesspeople, employers and government officials do not understand their obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and do not know how to comply.

Non-disabled people do not get many opportunities to interact with people with disabilities and, therefore, have misperceptions about people with disabilities. This leads to misunderstandings and frustrations that prevent people with and without disabilities from working, doing business, and playing together.

The disability community does not have a forum to share ideas, plan strategies, and implement solutions to the problems facing the community.

The Solution

The Community Outreach Program provides general and customized training for disability organizations, businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies. Trainings are eligible for California MCLE credit. We offer the following trainings:

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act, and other disability rights laws,
  • Customized Trainings on Disability Bias (Elimination of Bias MCLE)
  • ADA Title I
  • ADA Title II
  • ADA Title III
  • California Disability Rights Law
  • Fair Housing Act
  • Special Education Law
  • Disability Self-Advocacy
  • Health Care Rights Trainings

The Community Outreach Program has recently received a grant from the County of Orange Health Care Agency to provide "Access to Health Care" trainings for individuals with disabilities. DRLC also provides free disability sensitivity and awareness trainings to any organizations in the Orange County area.

We also participate in outreach activities to ensure that people know about the services provided by the Disability Rights Legal Center and other disability resources.

Created the Respect-ABILITY Disability Action & Advocacy Conference, which brings together disability rights activists to discuss major issues facing the disability community and create collaborations to address those issues. The Respectability Conference has given rise to the Respect-ABILITY Coalition, which works to pursue the Disability Rights Agenda in between the bi-annual conferences.

We act as the local coordinator for National Disability Mentoring Day in Los Angeles. This annual event which takes place on the third Wednesday of October each year promotes career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. DRLC coordinates the event and works to bring students with disabilities together with businesses, not-profit and educational organizations, government agencies, and legal professionals for a day of job shadowing and learning.

The experts at the DRLC often consult with the media, policy makers, government agencies, and disability organizations regarding disability rights and disability issues.
