Health Care Professionals

The Cancer Legal Resource Center (CLRC) is committed to providing information and resources on cancer-related legal issues to health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, psychosocial care providers, patient navigators, and patient advocates.

A cancer diagnosis can carry with it a variety of legal issues, including insurance coverage, taking time off work, employment discrimination, access to health care, and estate planning.  These legal issues can cause people unnecessary worry, confusion, stress, and can be overwhelming.  When legal issues are not addressed, people may find that although they have survived the disease, they may have lost their homes, jobs, insurance or families.

While we recognize that it should not take legal resources to access health care, understanding insurance options, or preserve one’s job, it frequently does.  When information is readily and easily accessible, we believe the quality of outcomes for patient survivorship improves.

Ultimately, our goal is to train health care professionals to identify cancer-related legal issues and legal barriers to health care and provide health care professionals with resources to assist their patients navigate through cancer-related legal issues, which we believe will improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.

The following resources are now available online for health care professionals:

Teleconference & Webinar Series:

The CLRC provides FREE teleconferences and webinars for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, health care professionals, and others coping with cancer.  People can participate by phone or online.  Upcoming teleconferences and webinars include:

Additional 2010 Webinars coming soon!

Health Care Professionals Survey

The CLRC has composed a survey of health care professionals to uncover the demographics of your patients, the frequently asked cancer-related legal questions and concerns raised by your patients, and your thoughts on the role health care professionals play in providing cancer-related legal information to their patients.  The information compiled from this survey will help us improve our services in the cancer community.

Health Care Professional Focus Group

The CLRC has developed a two-hour focus group to identify what types of information, resources, and training are most beneficial for health care professionals, their patients, and their colleagues.  During these seminars, attendees provide feedback and brainstorm with the CLRC staff on ways to reach other professionals in the cancer community while gaining hands-on tools to identify cancer-related legal issues that affect many of their patients.

The CLRC can provide a focus group for your community in person or by webinar. For more information, to host a focus group, or to register for an upcoming focus group, please email Sarah.Semrow@LLS.edu or call 213-736-1331.

The HCP Manual: A Legal Resource Guide for Oncology Health Care Professionals

The purpose of this guide is to educate health care professionals on the various questions and issues often relayed by patients coping with cancer, and to provide concise information that covers issues, from diagnosis through survivorship.  During this year, providers from across the nation have volunteered to take part in a review of The HCP Manual.  If you are interested in participating in this evaluation, your comments and feedback are welcome.

To receive a copy of The HCP Manual and a reviewer’s agreement, please email Jennifer.Fenton@LLS.edu

The online version of The HCP Manual will be available on March 15, 2010!
