How You Can Help
Externship
CANCER LEGAL RESOURCE CENTER
While working with the Cancer Legal Resource Center (CLRC), students receive training in cancer rights law and gain “hands-on” experience assisting cancer survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and others coping with cancer. The CLRC provides information and education about cancer-related legal issues through its national Telephone Assistance Line and national education and outreach program.
You can get actively involved by interviewing CLRC callers and providing information and resources on cancer-related legal issues, such as employment discrimination, insurance, and estate planning. You can enhance your research and writing skills by conducting legal research on a variety of topics and drafting correspondence. Students also have the opportunity to participate in cancer community events and cancer-related legislative and public policy initiatives.
Students are able to work flexible schedules and meet their pro bono requirements at the same time! Located at Loyola’s new Public Interest Law Center. The CLRC accepts students from law schools throughout the country.

DISABILITY RIGHTS LEGAL CENTER EXTERNSHIP
DRLC's externship provides students with a hands-on, practical legal experience working on emerging issues in disability rights law. The DRLC is a public interest law office that litigates high impact discrimination cases that address the civil rights of people with all types of disabilities. This includes class action and individual cases involving cutting-edge legal issues in the area of disability rights, including issues related to education, housing, and government services.
During their externship students will work with DRLC’s Civil Rights Litigation Program, Education Advocacy Program, and Options Counseling Program. Through work with these programs students will participate in DRLC's impact litigation as well as other forms of advocacy. Externs will be assigned to work on cases with DRLC attorneys and will gain real life experience with legal and factual research and writing, administrative exhaustion, discovery, law and motion, pre-trial and trial work, and appellate matters. Externs will also have the opportunity to attend depositions, court appearances, settlement conferences and mediations. Finally, students will also work on the telephone intake and case assessment process, and will be assigned one or more brief service cases in which they will have the opportunity to directly advocate for and/or negotiate on behalf of a client.
Students are able to work flexible schedules and meet their pro bono requirements at the same time! Located at Loyola’s new Public Interest Law Center. DRLC accepts students from law schools throughout the country.
Students can enroll in 3 – 6 units per semester, but may enroll in no more than 8 total externship units with the DRLC. Given the nature of this externship, students schedule their own in office hours to fulfill their requirements.
