CANCER LEGAL RESOURCE CENTER

Remember why you came to law school in the first place!  Take theory and put it into practice.  The Cancer Legal Resource Center [CLRC] provides information and education about cancer-related legal issues to the public through its telephone assistance line.  The CLRC also conducts outreach programs and seminars for community groups, employers, and healthcare professionals and is actively involved in community activities to raise public awareness of cancer-related legal and public policy issues.

Law Clerks and Externs receive training in cancer rights law and gain “hands-on” experience assisting people with cancer, cancer survivors, their families, friends, and others affected by cancer.  Get actively involved by interviewing CLRC callers and providing telephone assistance and information on cancer-related legal issues.  You can also enhance your research and writing skills by drafting correspondence and conducting legal research for callers.  Law Clerks and Externs have the additional opportunity to participate in health fairs and community programs as schedules permit.

Enrich your law school experience and join us in this worthwhile program!

CIVIL RIGHTS LITIGATION PROJECT

The Civil Rights Litigation Project litigates high impact discrimination cases that address the rights of people with all types of disabilities. This includes class action and individual cases involving cutting-edge legal issues in the area of disability rights. Our cases, which are primarily litigated in federal court, actively involve co-counsel with prominent private and public interest law firms such as Kirkland & Ellis, Latham & Watkins, Winston & Strawn and the ACLU.

Law Clerks and Externs are assigned to work with our civil rights attorneys on two or more active litigation cases and are given real world exposure to complex civil litigation. Law Clerks and Externs will gain real life experience with legal and factual research and writing, discovery, law and motion, pre-trial and trial work, and appellate matters.

Law Clerks and Externs also have the opportunity to participate in or observe depositions, court appearances, settlement conferences and mediations.

Law Clerks and Externs will also work with DRLC’s Options Counseling Program where they will learn how to conduct client and witness interviews, assess a case for litigation and other alternatives, and provide information and referrals to callers.

EDUCATION ADVOCACY PROJECT

Many children with disabilities do not receive the special education and related services to which they are entitled.

The Education Advocacy Project:

  • Provides self-advocacy training, information and one-to-one assistance to parents of minority and disadvantaged students with learning-related difficulties, who need to access special education services in schools and receive an appropriate public education.
  • Assists clients with Individual Education Programs [IEPs], as well as due process hearings.
  • Works in the juvenile justice system to help both students on probation and foster children with learning difficulties to get back to school, improve their grades and achieve their dreams.

EAP Law Clerks and Externs:

  • Assist in all facets of the project including:
    • Interviewing potential clients
    • Preparing state agency complaints
    • Attending IEP meetings and mediations
    • Assisting with preparation of due process hearings
    • Attend due process hearings
    • Assist clients with Individual Education Programs (IEPs), as well as Due Process Hearings.

OUR MISSION

The Mission of the Disability Rights Legal Center is to promote the rights of people with disabilities and the public interest in and awareness of those rights by providing legal and related services.
